In my Introduction to Global Engagement class (CGST 205), we were tasked with creating a mini auto-ethnography in the form of a creative cultural self-portrait. This assignment encouraged me to tease out multiple aspects of my identity and thoroughly reflect on them. It took some vulnerability and bravery to acknowledge, or in some cases re-discover, parts of myself I may not have been very familiar with, or that I had compromised on in my first year in the U.S., in order to “fit in.”

This was among our first assignments for this class, and it was instrumental in providing us with a framework for approaching subsequent coursework and class discussions in this minor, with openness, vulnerability, and the desire to look beyond the surface.
